We started Medical Monofilament in 1999 in order to produce the best possible, most affordable, sensory testing monofilament available. Our goal was and still is to help decrease the incidence of diabetic foot ulcerations and amputations for diabetic patients at risk.
For over 15 years, we have consistently provided an excellent product and service to our customers so they in turn may better educate and empower individuals with diabetes.
Why is this important? Every 17 seconds, someone in the world is diagnosed with diabetes. Today there are 28 million cases of diabetes in the United States alone, and by 2025 that number is estimated to grow to 50 million. Diabetes and its complications are also the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S., and costs add up to $175 billion annually.
Diabetic neuropathy and loss of protective sensation (LOPS) are responsible for $42 million, or 24% of all costs with 60% of all non-traumatic amputations occurring in diabetic patients. For those with diabetic foot ulcerations and/or lower extremity amputations, their five-year mortality rate is higher than that from prostate cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer and Hodgkin’s disease (ADA 2011).
With a simple and effective test available, these statistics are unacceptable. In fact, studies have shown that amputations are preventable 45%-85% of the time with proper care and attention. Our mission is to create a high-quality medical device that allows patients and clinicians to perform a simple test diagnosing loss of protective sensation (LOPS), and preventing diabetic foot ulcerations and amputations (CDC 2011). To this end, we hope to help patients receive proactive diabetes foot care for a healthy and sustainable future.
